About Our Youth Programs

Instructional Program (Grades K - 2)

RISING STARS - Kindergarten

The Rising Stars program will emphasize safety, fun, and learning the skills and game of lacrosse.   Scrimmages are across the field sideways and we require 2 pass attempts before shooting.  No checking is allowed and we use a 6 v 6 format with no goalies. The season begins inside in late February as Gym space becomes available and moves outside when we can by early April and concludes in early June. We may schedule scrimmages agains other similar Rising Star programs with nearby towns. If players progress enough with their stick skills we may ask them to participate in some of the Lightning games later in the season as stick skills and confidence develop.

Boys Lightning - 1st and 2nd Grades

The Boys Lightning program will also emphasize safety, fun, and learning the skills and game of lacrosse, but we will also play a travel schedule against other towns.  Teams will practice once or twice per week and typically play games on Sunday's. You should anticipate one skills practice during the week and one team practice on Friday or Saturday.  We use a 8 versus 8 player format with smaller lacrosse goals and goalies. Scrimmages are across the field sideways and require 2 pass attempts before shooting.  No downward stick checking or body checks allowed. (Poke and Lift checks are acceptable)  We will have “intra-squad” games as well as playing games in the Mass Bay Youth Lacrosse League (www.mbyll.org) against similar teams from local towns.  MBYLL requires balanced teams and no standings or scores are kept. The season begins indoors in late February as gym space in town becomes available and we move outdoors in early April and concludes in early June.

BOYS SELECT PROGRAM OVERVIEW - U13/U15

We will continue with our U13 & U15 Town Select boys teams for 2012. We expect to play in the new MBYLL league that will compete against other Town Select teams.

HYLA requires that all Select participants be committed to the sport of lacrosse with practice and game attendance required for the Spring Travel MBYLL teams in addition to playing with the Select Team. The team will practice one night per week and play games on Monday or Friday nights. The team will play against other towns with similarly constructed teams and may also play against some skill level appropriate all-star teams

Tryouts will be held in the fall and rosters will be limited.  Head coaches shall make final determination on who participates on each team based upon skill level. There is always the possibility that your son may be asked to spend some time playing on a Spring Travel team to "Hone his Game" and called up at a later date when progress is shown.

For 2012:

  • Greg Stebbins will head up our U13 Boys Team
  • Drew Schneeloch will head up the U15 Boys Team.

In addition to our league games, there will also be 2 or 3 travel tournaments that all players will be expected to participate in. All Tournament fees are extra and split amongst all players.

Players that make the team will be provided uniforms (shirt & shorts) that are theirs to keep. Think of this as a much cheaper alternative to NESLL or Club Select Lacrosse at $150/per player.
